Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2

Welcome back to Wheelgun Wednesday, our weekly article series where we cover everything related to revolvers. Today’s topic is the technical challenge of effective sound suppression of revolvers. In Part 1 we looked at mechanically sealed revolvers, today we’ll focus on “Gap Sealing Cartridges”, an uncommon approach with plenty of potential.
Wheelgun Wednesday @ TFB:

Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2
Concept
In Part 1 we’ve seen that the most common sealed revolver, the M1895 Nagant, combines a mechanical action with a peculiar cartridge to seal its cylinder gap. The two solutions must work together to provide the seal: the cartridge alone would not offer any advantage in a conventionally designed revolver. Now we’ll look at cartridges designed to offer a sealing function, with no changes required on the standard revolver architecture.
In these cartridges, the bullet is generally seated deeper within the case and upon firing the sealing element moves from the case towards the barrel, providing a reliable obturation of the gap and preventing the release of gas. This configuration places this type of cartridge in the “telescoped ammunition” category.
Known Use
As far as we can tell there has been only a couple of actual firearms utilizing the concept of telescoped ammunition to provide effective suppression to a revolver. These are the Knight’s Armament Company Revolver Rifle and Revolver Pistol.
The first, possibly a little more known thanks to a few photos floating on the internet, is an integrally suppressed rifle built on a modified Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Magnum Revolver.

The pistol version is built on a modified Ruger GP100.
Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2 – KAC Suppressed Revolver Rifle and Revolver Pistol (Image credit: Mythic Armory)
The elusive firearms both employ telescoped ammunition, where a full-caliber sabot, presumably in aluminum, holds a sub-caliber bullet (.30 in the .44 rifle, .224 in the .357 pistol). The barrel is bored for the projectile, so upon firing the sabot doesn’t fully leave the cylinder and stops its forward movement against the edge of the barrel, sealing the gap and allowing reliable suppression.
Data about these firearms, allegedly employed during the first Gulf War, is quite limited, but some sources list an energy comparable to a 9mm Luger for the RR and in .22LR level for the RP. Both rounds are subsonic to get the most out of the suppressed setup.
Similar Cartridges
When we talk about telescoped ammunition, a concept quite evolved in automatic cannons, we may think about Textron’s submission to the NGSW program and the previous LSAT. This “Cased Telescoped Ammunition” (CTA) was supposed to operate in firearms with a movable chamber, relative to the barrel, i.e. a solution potentially resulting in high-pressure gas leaking from a chamber-to-barrel gap.

TFB did quite an extensive coverage of the LSAT program (thank you Nathaniel!) and the issue of the gap was discussed in Part 2 of Mrs. Kori Phillips, Program Officer for LSAT, interview (read the whole articles, they are worth the time):
TFB: You obviously have to have a separate chamber and a separate barrel unit. One thing that might be a negative is that on a revolver you have a gap there, where gas can escape. Do you have that problem, or have you found a solution to that?
KP: For case telescoped, the front of the cartridge actually seals the breech, and the plastic flows into the empty space. It’s sort of a balancing act to let the cartridge expand and flow, but not so much that you can’t get the case out of there. It obturates the chamber just like it would with a brass case.
In this case, it appears that careful design and the right selection of materials allow the case to deform just enough to provide a suitable seal. Possibly not the most cost-effective solution for civilian revolvers, as it relies on R&D and unconventional materials, but conceptually an approach that could work.
Patents out there
When the Textron CTA got TFB coverage, several commenters (including yours truly), quickly saw the potential for revolvers chambered in similar cartridges. Couple a rifle round with something like a S&W X-frame and you could get rifle ballistics out of a wheelgun.
Like the majority of the great ideas that we come up with every day in the comment section, the concept had already seen some development. As the incredibly knowledgeable Daniel E. Watters promptly pointed out, in the ’80s an inventor named Charles R. Olsen devised:

a means for utilizing smaller-diameter bullets in larger-diameter cartridge cases, to achieve higher velocity without bottlenecking the cartridge case, and a firearm having a reduced bore adapted to that cartridge. Additionally, the invention provides a means of sealing the cylinder-to-barrel gap in revolvers, eliminating gas leakage at that point and thereby increasing muzzle velocity by eight to twenty percent.
This invention is applicable to current gun models and cartridge components with little modification.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2 – An embodiment of the gas seal round from Patent US 4,457,093 B2 (United States Patent and Trademark Office)
Olsen’s main goal is offering rifle ballistics from a conventionally manufactured revolver, with a line of prototype cartridges he names “INVICTA”. However, he does recognize the suppression potential. The now-expired patent is an easy and interesting read with a plethora of practical insights, uncommon features for this type of document. For example, we know that a material deemed ideal for the sabot is Lexan, a common polycarbonate.
We can see that conceptually the approach is very similar to what KAC employed in the Revolver Rifle and Pistol, and given that at the time Olsen’s patent was active, we can conjecture that he may have had a role in that development.
Interestingly, Olsen’s invention was cited by S&W in a now-abandoned patent filed in 2005. The gap-sealing feature however is completely lost in this invention, and the purpose isn’t as clear.
What If?
As a thought exercise, if we were to replicate Olsen’s concept, or a CTA, in the most accessible way, how would we proceed? Let’s set the goal as replicating the suppressed performance of subsonic .300 BLK, in a revolver.
Let’s see a possible “What If?” scenario.
First of all: what is a CTA cartridge if not a glorified shotshell with a sub-caliber slug and barrel? So, let’s select the .410 bore as the cartridge case, the only shotshell with revolvers chambered for. If the revolver can chamber the 3″ version of the shell, we’re sure we can comfortably chamber the heaviest, 200 gr and above, .30 caliber bullets. We’d then need a suitable sabot, capable of providing a seal when pushed against the barrel, without disintegrating. Olsen’s polycarbonate may be a solution, but 3D-printed nylon could be a great candidate.
So here we have it, the concept of the .30-410 TFB.
Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2 – The .30-410 TFB concept (Shell by Bartosz Rakowski and bullet by V.MAX via GrabCAD)
Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2 – The .30-410 TFB concept (Shell by Bartosz Rakowski and bullet by V.MAX via GrabCAD)
With .300 BLK as a benchmark, we should have a .30 barrel, hopefully with the right rifling. Enters the Magnum Research BFR with its wide range of customizations. The massive revolver, in its long cylinder configuration, can be chambered in .410 3″ (with plenty of strength to handle several times its design pressure, just in case) but also in .300 BLK, meaning that the two main components are readily available.
Wheelgun Wednesday: Silencing the Gap – Part 2 – Magnum Research BFR in .30-410 TFB with a Dead Air Nomad 30 suppressor
Granted, Magnum Research surely strives to always associate the caliber of the barrel to the one of the cylinder, but given the extent of unconventional projects their custom shop handles (including threaded barrels), the possibility truly seems there.
Conclusions
What do you readers think about having the cartridge itself carry the effort of sealing the cylinder gap? Would you agree that a commercial solution based on Olsen’s patent would be very interesting? Do you like the .30-410 TFB or do you have better options?
As usual, let us know in the comments. (And feel free to tease Magnum Research’s custom shop with this concept, who knows…) […]

Democrat Massachusetts Governor Turns ‘Emotional’ as She Announces Conversion of Roxbury Recreation Center into Shelter for Illegal Immigrants (VIDEO)

Screenshot: WCVB
The Governor of Massachusetts, Democrat Maura Healey, has decided to convert a vital recreation center in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood into a temporary shelter for illegal immigrants starting Wednesday.
It can be recalled that Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll have declared a state of emergency and asked their citizens to loan extra room in their homes to dangerous illegal immigrants.
Migrants from around the world are being smuggled into sanctuary states like Massachusetts every day by the Biden Regime.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, tens of thousands of illegal aliens have flooded New York City, a proud sanctuary city, and they were recently filmed lining up for blocks to receive free (taxpayer-funded) housing in New York City.
The Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex, a central facility in Roxbury, was requisitioned with less than two days’ notice, leaving residents feeling disregarded and marginalized.

Healey’s action, aimed at addressing the growing number of migrants in the city, has been criticized for treating the Roxbury neighborhood ‘like garbage’ and giving illegal immigrants preferential treatment.
Boston has been grappling with the presence of illegal immigrants, many of whom have resorted to sleeping rough at Logan International Airport. Estimates suggest that about 100-200 people are currently sheltered at the airport. Massachusetts State Police have also been deployed to provide assistance at the airport.

Governor Healey, facing backlash for the short notice and neglect of the Roxbury community, defended her decision as a necessary step amidst a challenging situation.
“This is probably the eighth or ninth major location we’ve opened around the state. We’ve been all over the state. We are now coming to Boston. It’s just borne out of necessity,” said Healey, according to Boston 25.
Governor Healey reassured that the shelter would be a short-term solution, planning to vacate the premises by the end of May while seeking further federal funding.
Last week, during a virtual meeting, Governor Healey turned emotional as she announced that she was converting Roxbury Recreation Center into a new shelter for illegal immigrants.
“I get emotional, guys, okay? Because I’m committed to this. Little kids need to be able to breathe clean air, they need to be able to access swimming pools. They need to have lifeguards there who are going to teach them how to swim, and they need to have activities. I don’t know what we’re going to do for a couple of three months. I’ll call universities. I’ll call other places.”

BREAKING: Fani Willis and Lover Nathan Wade SUBPOENAED to Testify in Upcoming Hearing According to New Lawsuit Filed by Trump RICO Co-Defendant

Fani Willis with paramour Nathan Wade
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her paramour Nathan Wade, a top Trump prosecutor she hired, both got subpoenaed to testify at an upcoming evidentiary hearing according to a new lawsuit filed by Trump’s RICO co-defendant Michael Roman.
Fani Willis’ office was accused of “intentionally withholding information” in a new lawsuit filed by Ashleigh Merchant, the attorney representing Trump co-defendant Michael Roman.
The subpoenas may force Fani Willis and Nathan Wade to give sworn testimony during a televised hearing on February 15 in response to a motion filed by Michael Roman seeking to have the RICO charge dismissed as well as disqualify Willis over her romantic relationship with Wade. The hearing was scheduled earlier this month. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee told Fani Willis to respond to Michael Roman’s allegations of misconduct by Friday.
The new lawsuit filed this week by Michael Roman also accused Fani Willis of “stonewalling” attorney Ashleigh Merchant.
“It is evidence that the [Fulton County District Attorney] has withheld the records without substantial justification,” the complaint stated, according to ABC News. “Indeed, it appears that [Fulton County DA’s Office] is acting intentionally and in an effort to hide from public view public documents showing how [the office] has spent public monies related to the operation of the office.”

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fani Willis “financially benefited” from a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, a top prosecutor she hired to go after President Trump.
A motion was previously filed in the Superior Court of Fulton County on behalf of defendant Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign official who was hit with counts 1, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 in Fani Willis’ RICO case.
The filing claims Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor hired to go after Trump, paid for luxury vacations he took with Fani Willis to Napa Valley and a cruise in the Caribbean – and used money from Fulton County to pay for their out-of-town escapades.
“County records show that Wade, who has played a prominent role in the election interference case, has been paid nearly $654,000 in legal fees since January 2022. The DA authorizes his compensation.” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
ABC News reported:
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Nathan Wade, one of her top prosecutors in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump and 18 others, have been subpoenaed to testify at an upcoming evidentiary hearing set to examine allegations that they were involved in an improper relationship while investigating the former president, according to a new lawsuit filed in Georgia this week.
The claim that Willis and Wade had been subpoenaed to testify was contained in a copy of the lawsuit, obtained by ABC News, that was filed by the attorney for one of Trump’s co-defendants in the election case, accusing the Fulton County district attorney’s office of “intentionally withholding information.”
The lawsuit accuses the office of “stonewalling” the attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, in her efforts to obtain records from the office through public information requests.
Fani Willis and Nathan Wade have fiercely fought to avoid testifying about their relationship.
Late Tuesday night Nathan Wade settled his divorce case with his estranged wife Jocelyn Wade – at the last minute – on the eve of a hearing – to avoid testifying on his improper relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
“All of the issues we pled for temporary support and attorneys fees have been resolved by this agreement,” said Andrea Hastings, one of Joycelyn Wade’s attorneys, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. “The case is not resolved on a final basis. We still have a lot of work to do to be able to resolve this case through either a final settlement or a trial.”
Nathan Wade’s estranged wife Jocelyn Wade fought to unseal and make public their divorce records.
Earlier this month Fani Willis was subpoenaed to testify in Nathan Wade’s divorce case. Willis previously tried to quash the subpoena. She was supposed to give a deposition last Tuesday.

NEW: James Biden to Testify in Biden Impeachment Probe

Joe Biden’s slimy brother James Biden will testify to lawmakers in the Biden impeachment inquiry on February 21.
“James Biden will appear for a transcribed interview on February 21, 2024. We look forward to his testimony,” the House Oversight Committee said on Wednesday.

BREAKING
James Biden will appear for a transcribed interview on February 21, 2024. We look forward to his testimony.
— Oversight Committee (@GOPoversight) January 31, 2024

James Biden made a fortune off the Biden family name and received a lot of money from companies linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

James Comer recently uncovered a $200,000 direct payment to Joe Biden after he received James and Hunter’s subpoenaed documents.
In 2018, Jim Biden received $600,000 in ‘loans’ from Americore Health LLC, a failing/bankrupt rural hospital operator. According to bankruptcy documents, Jim Biden received the loans “based upon representations that his last name Biden could open doors and that he could obtain a large investment from the Middle East based on his political connections.”
On March 1, 2018, Americore Health LLC wired a $200,000 payment to Jim and Sara Biden’s personal bank account. On that very same day, Jim Biden then wrote a $200,000 check to Joe Biden, AKA, “The Big Guy.”
Jim Biden wrote the check to Joe Biden as a so-called “loan repayment.” Does Joe Biden have documents proving he lent his brother such a large sum of money? “What were the terms?” Comer asked.

Comer previously demanded Joe Biden provide loan documents (loan payment, loan agreement) and IRS filings regarding the $200,000 “loan repayment” James Biden said he made to Joe “The Big Guy” Biden in 2018.
The Republican-led Oversight Committee recently said Joe Biden is refusing to provide applicable loan documentation to show he loaned his brother James Biden money.
Joe Biden also received $40,000 in laundered China money.

Additionally, GOP Senators Grassley and Johnson produced records showing Hunter Biden and James Biden received hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies linked to the Communist Chinese Government.
Notably, Hunter Biden’s firm Owasco took money from CEFC, an energy company that is effectively an arm of the Chinese Communist Party.
Hunter Biden worked with Gongwen Dong and Ye Jianming, both men are linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
On August 8, 2017, $5 million was wired from a CEFC-affiliated investment vehicle (Northern International) to the bank account for Hudson West III, which spent the next year transferring $4,790,375 million directly to Hunter Biden’s firm, Owasco.
Grassley recently produced records showing Hunter Biden was paid $100,000 a month and James Biden was paid $65,000 a month – and Hunter would be paid a one time retainer fee of $500,000.
Furthermore, according to documents obtained by CBS News, more than 150 financial transactions involving Hunter Biden and James Biden were flagged by US banks as ‘concerning.’
The banking records, obtained by Ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley, reveal James Biden’s company, the Lion Hall Group, received huge wire transfers from a Chinese consulting firm in 2018.
James Biden has denied being the Biden family ‘fixer’ despite evidence to the contrary. […]
