EU Threatens More Sanctions If Russia Moves Nukes To Belarus

The 9K720 Iskander (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) is a mobile short-range ballistic missile system produced and deployed by the Russian military. The missile travels at a terminal hypersonic speed of 2100–2600 m/s (Mach 6–7) and can reach an altitude of 50 km at ranges up to 500 km. The Iskander has several different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel–air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions. The missile can also carry nuclear warheads. Image via Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0
The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has cautioned Belarus about allowing Russia to station tactical nuclear weapons on its territory.

#Belarus hosting Russian nuclear weapons would mean an irresponsible escalation & threat to European security. Belarus can still stop it, it is their choice.
The EU stands ready to respond with further sanctions.

In an interview on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the move was triggered by Britain’s decision last week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium.
“We are doing what they have been doing for decades, stationing them in certain allied countries, preparing the launch platforms and training their crews,” Putin said, speaking in an interview on state television that aired Saturday night.

From Rockets to Ball Bearings, Pentagon Struggles to Feed War Machine

The Navy admiral had a blunt message for the assembled military contractors:
“Look at me. I am not forgiving the fact you’re not delivering the ordnance we need. OK?” Adm. Daryl Caudle, who is in charge of delivering weapons to most of the Navy’s East Coast-based fleet, warned contractors during an industry gathering in January. “We’re talking about war-fighting, national security, and going against a competitor here and a potential adversary that is like nothing we’ve ever seen. And we can’t dillydally around with these deliveries.”

Xi Jinping to Visit Russia, Hold Talks With Vladimir Putin Next Week: What Does This Mean for World Politics?

They are the world’s most powerful autocrats. In 2019, Chinese president Xi Jinping described his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as his “best friend”. Last year, when the two leaders met just before the Ukraine invasion, they sealed a “no limits” partnership, which caused concern to the West.
As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its second year of battle and ties between the United States and Beijing worsen over Taiwan and the spy balloon, Xi plans to visit Vladimir Putin in Russia as soon as next week, reported Reuters.
[ Editor’s Note: Any plans Russia and China have for aggressive action anywhere, separate or together, needs to take place well before the 2024 U.S. election when there is likely to be a dramatic change in foreign policy. They know this. Right now, our adversaries see weak leadership, internal chaos, and a decline in U.S. military readiness.]

China’s Xi Jinping Takes Rare Direct Aim at U.S. in Speech

In rare direct criticism of Washington, Chinese leader Xi Jinping blamed what he termed a U.S.-led campaign to contain China for worsening the troubles and global uncertainties that his country has faced over the past five years.
“Western countries—led by the U.S.—have implemented all-round containment, encirclement and suppression against us, bringing unprecedentedly severe challenges to our country’s development,” Mr. Xi was quoted by state media as saying on Monday.
Mr. Xi’s comments marked an unusual departure for a leader who has generally refrained from directly criticizing the U.S. in public remarks. He was speaking at a meeting with members of China’s top political advisory body during an annual legislative session in Beijing, according to a Chinese-language readout published by the official Xinhua News Agency.

US: Iran Could Produce Nuclear Material For A Bomb ‘In About 12 Days’

A senior US defense official said Tuesday that Iran could produce enough fissile material for one nuclear bomb in under two weeks. The warning from US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl came as the UN confirmed Iran has enriched uranium to nearly weapons-grade level at an underground nuclear site. Kahl said at a House of Representatives hearing that Iran’s nuclear program had significantly progressed since the Trump administration withdrew from the Iranian nuclear deal in 2018.

Editor’s Note: Even a conventional conflict with Iran will throw the region into turmoil. World oil markets will be rocked. Chances are good that shipping channels in and out of the Persian Gulf will be threatened and other waterways mined. Above-ground Saudi oil infrastructure has been dialed-in for decades and will be decimated by Iranian missiles if they are part of the conflict.

We Have a Real UFO Problem. And It’s Not Balloons.

On a clear, sunny day in April 2014, two F/A-18s took off for an air combat training mission off the coast of Virginia. The jets, part of my Navy fighter squadron, climbed to an altitude of 12,000 and steered towards Warning Area W-72, an exclusive block of airspace ten miles east of Virginia Beach. All traffic into the training area goes through a single GPS point at a set altitude — almost like a doorway into a massive room where military jets can operate without running into other aircraft. Just at the moment the two jets crossed the threshold, one of the pilots saw a dark gray cube inside of a clear sphere — motionless against the wind, fixed directly at the entry point. The jets, only 100 feet apart, zipped past the object on either side. The pilots had come so dangerously close to something they couldn’t identify that they terminated the training mission immediately and returned to base.

North Korea Warns U.S., Says ‘Provocative Acts’ May Be Construed as a ‘Declaration Of War’

North Korea test-fired four “Hwasal-2 strategic cruise missiles” from the city of Kim Chaek towards the Sea of Japan on Friday morning, according to reports in North Korean media. This announcement coincided with joint military exercises hosted by the Pentagon and involving US and South Korean forces.
In response to what it sees as persistent “hostile and provocative practices” by the US, North Korea has warned that these actions may be construed as a ‘declaration of war’, according to a statement by Kwon Jong-gun, the director-general of the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s US affairs department, as reported by state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Editor’s Note: The U.S., ROK, DPRK, and Japan need to proceed carefully. A conflict on the Peninsula would spread. The aftermath for the region would be ugly on multiple levels. Beyond the death and destruction from kinetic conflict, eventually the region would be faced with the migration of millions of malnourished, stunted and wasted North Koreans. This outcome is of particular concern to China as they share an 840-mile common border.

Moscow Backs Out of New START Treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended Moscow’s participation in the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the U.S., announcing the move Tuesday in a bitter speech where he made clear he would not change his strategy in the war in Ukraine.
In his long-delayed state-of-the-nation address, Putin cast his country — and Ukraine — as victims of Western double-dealing and said it was Russia, not Ukraine, fighting for its very existence.
“We aren’t fighting the Ukrainian people,” Putin said in a speech days before the war’s first anniversary on Friday. “The Ukrainian people have become hostages of the Kyiv regime and its Western masters, which have effectively occupied the country.”

Editor’s Note: According to the U.S. State Department, both the United States and the Russian Federation met the central limits of the New START Treaty by February 5, 2018, and have stayed at or below them ever since. Those limits are:
700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), deployed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and deployed heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments;
1,550 nuclear warheads on deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs, and deployed heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments (each such heavy bomber is counted as one warhead toward this limit);
800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers, SLBM launchers, and heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments.

U.K.: Russia’s Death Toll From Ukraine War Is as High as 60,000, 200K injured

Russia’s death toll from the war in Ukraine has reached as high as 60,000, the U.K. said, an estimate that draws attention to Moscow’s strategy of sending poorly protected soldiers on near-suicidal missions to break through Ukrainian lines.
In its daily intelligence briefing Friday, the U.K.’s Defense Ministry said the Russian armed forces and private military contractors fighting alongside them as paramilitary forces had lost 40,000 to 60,000 troops and suffered up to 200,000 casualties, which includes troops killed or wounded in action.
The estimate comes as Russian forces continued to press attacks along eastern Ukraine on Friday, and major Western powers met in Munich for an annual European security conference attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.
