HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Look Mom a FAMAS or I’m at a Loss?

Welcome everyone to the 239th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.
In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the Remington 700 chambered in .458 SOCOM was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction remains up with the wildcat chambered bolt action gat still up for grabs. We can only hope it’ll make its way to a new home in the not-so-distant future.
In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a very rare pre-ban FAMAS chambered in .223/5.56. As is tradition, this foreign bullpup gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $75,000 Starting Bid with No Reserve.

“For the true believer in Gun Jesus. Hot Gat” -Giorgio O.
“That carry handle has its own zip code, and that grip is so fat that NRA RSO’s are in orbit around it. Hot gat because this fudd doesn’t understand the appeal.” – Adam Scepaniak, Fudd
“Financial insanity but I don’t care – still a smoking hot gat. Pairs beautifully with your yacht and vintage Ferrari.” -Will P.
“Ca fusil est tres chaud!” -Doug E.

Manufactured since 1978 by the French company MAS the FAMAS is one of those holy grail-type rifles. I mean that in the sense that it might be bad, good, or otherwise, but you’d never know because no one has one. I’ve had the privilege of shooting a lot of obscure, rare, and otherwise cool firearms and I’ve never encountered a FAMAS.  It’s one of those guns that fell right in the middle of multiple weapons and import bans and I’m sure there’s really only a select few people that can buy them.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Look Mom a FAMAS or I’m at a Loss?
So is there anything really cool about it? Well not really considering it’s a .223 (all my research indicates it’s not up to 5.56 NATO spec) and it’s a simple blowback design. The idea of a blowback bullpup being worth anything close to this amount is absolutely insane.  But hey, it’s a FAMAS and you don’t have one so you’ll never know just how good or bad it just might be.
So what do you think?  Is this French bullpup worth it with an opening bid of $75k or are you better off staying away from anything French today? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Bolt Action Big Bore or Ammo Prices Make Me Cry More?
For those unfamiliar, the .458 SOCOM was designed as a form, fit, function cartridge for the AR-15.  By simply swapping the upper receiver the shooter could swap between very heavy subsonic and supersonic cartridges that perform similarly to a light 45-70 Goverment but in a much smaller platform.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Bolt Action Big Bore or Ammo Prices Make Me Cry More?
The cartridge was originally designed by Tromix who was contracted to build the first .458 SOCOM rifle in February 2001. The idea was sound except when it came to capacity and weight.  The heavier projectiles and oversized cases meant only 10 rounds could fit in a 30-round magazine. While rifles can still be found in this chambering, the caliber never took hold and can still be considered a wildcat.  Every once and a while someone decides it’d be a great idea to chamber a non-AR-15 pattern rifle in it, and all I have to say is; “Well, I hope they’re a reloader because ammo isn’t cheap”. At least it comes with a 308 barrel as well.
What do you think? Is this custom 2-barrel Remington 700 worth it for $1,375 or are you better off not having to potentially hunt for reloading supplies?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Golden Stag or Boomers Bag?
In all seriousness, who’s buying this?  It’s almost like someone asked the age-old question, “Do you feel lucky punk?” while watching Narcos for the first time in a nursing home in Montana. Don’t get me wrong, the Model 29 is all around old and new-school cool, but seriously, why? Look, I get the engraving is immaculate and yes those grips are very well cut, but I’ve never looked at a classic revolver and thought “Yeah let’s use racks add some gold, and then sprinkle in some engraving along the way……”. Maybe there’s a world where once you retire you get a piece like this, but I’m certainly looking at that world through a telescope hoping it doesn’t spread. So no, I’m not feeling lucky punk.

Just when you think you’ve seen all possible selector markings, well then there’s this. Even in a three-step tier, I never imagined anything going from one to “Donkey Show”.  If someone were to use this in a defensive situation, well just pray that the jury has a sense of humor.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? It Takes Glock Mags or the Price Tag Makes Me Sad?
AR pattern PCCs come in all shapes and sizes and over the years we’ve all agreed that there’s nothing we can really agree on.  So I guess if you’re trying to be as practical as possible, it makes sense to stick with double stack single feed glock magazines.  They don’t have that cool strait colt mag aesthetic, but they do work and are available just about everywhere. While this gun is built from quality parts, there’s a certain wow factor that I can’t seem to find. I bet it shoots great, but I don’t think that justifies the price tag.
What do you think? Is this little PCC worth it for just a shade over $1k or are you better buying something a little less custom? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

Calibers like 40 Smith and Wesson are like Hollywood blockbusters.  Even after the original fanfare has faded, it’s only a matter of time before it’s subsequently reintroduced and rebranded as somehow relevant. Is it something we asked for?  Not really, but it’s gonna happen anyway.

On consignment from a large collection of Flannery engraved Colt firearms is this 11981 Colt Python 6’’ .357 Mag. Being an excellent condition original Colt Python, the firearm on its own is quite rare and collectible however the gun has also been engraved by master engraver Jeff Flannery. Jeff Flannery Engraving Company, is a nationally recognized leader in the field of arms decoration. Jeff’s experience in the custom gun craft began in the early 1960’s when he studied Kentucky rifle making and engraving with the famous master, Cecil Brooks, whose works are in the possession of many famous Americans. His work can run well into four digits with over a year lead time. The gun is nickel plated and heavily engraved with nitre accent parts. Further, the gun features custom rams horn grips. A signed letter of authenticity produced by Jeff Flannery will accompany the firearm. This is for all intents and purposes, a functional worth of art worthy of any Colt collection.
We have over 10 Flannery Engraved Colts at the moment, please see our other items!
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Colt Magic or Ruined Classic?
Older Colt Pythons are subjectively and objectively just cool. There’s a certain cool factor around these guns and how they’re built that’s hard to explain. If you’ve ever had a chance to handle or shoot one, it’s something that’s instantly understood. There was a hope that the second-generation Python would pick up the torch, but sadly it seems to have fallen far short of the mark.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Colt Magic or Ruined Classic?
Older, now 1st generation Python and others are still worth a massive sum of money compared to other revolvers from this era. Why? Well, that’s the million-dollar question. Some will say build quality, others will cite materials, or maybe they just didn’t make them like they used to. Regardless, these will always stand the test of time and seem to only gain value. I’m not sure how engraving the entire gun increases the resale value, but I guess we’re now going to see if it does.
So what do you think? Is this Colt Python cool enough to warrant a price tag just below five figures or are you better off looking for one that’s priced far lower? As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? American Hero or Germane Zero?
The 9mm Luger is a WWII classic. While it might not live on as fondly as the M1911, it certainly became a classic for both collectors and historians alike.  This toggle-locked recoil-operated pistol was produced and served for serval nations from 1989 to 1949 before it was officially retired.  Due to potentially questionable origin, Luger enthusiasts are usually an exceptionally rare breed among collectors.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? American Hero or Germane Zero?
I guess that’s what makes this pistol that little bit even more interesting. Not only is it not an original (technically), but it’s gone in the totally opposite direction in terms of theme and origin. Granted there are not too many manufacturers of these pistols out there nowadays, so if you wanted something “new” this would be as close as you’d come.  I think I’d be okay without the gold plating and engraving.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Pistol Bolt Action 300 Whisper or Please God No More?

Welcome everyone to the 232nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.
In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the blue and pink 1911 Platipus was fudd crap.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Pistol Bolt Action 300 Whisper or Please God No More?
For those not familiar with 300 Whisper, it’s sorta like .223 Remington compared to 5.56×45 NATO.  Devoloped in the 1990’s by J.D. Jones of SSK Industries, the idea was to be able to use both lightweight and heavyweight (subsonic) bullets. SSK registered the wordmark “whisper” leading to the development of a slew of other cartridges like the 300 Warrior Carbine and 300 Fireball. Today the variant most everyone in the firearms world knows is 300 Blackout.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Pistol Bolt Action 300 Whisper or Please God No More?
I wish I could make sense of this pistol, but this all seems lost on me.  It’s a lot of effort put into a caliber that was designed to be versatile, work in AR pattern rifles, and be suppressor-compatible.  I guess you could say this is versatile? But it’s certainly not suppressor-ready.  It seems like one of those guns built around a new cool caliber at the time, and then was placed in a safe and forgotten.  Maybe with some threading, this could be fun, but currently, I’m failing to see the point of why this exists.
What do you think? Is this custom 300 Whisper worth it for just a shade under $1k or are you better served saving that money for a rainy day? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? The 2011 Unicorn or Brightness Settings Be Warned?
For those not familiar with the Stealth Arms Platipus, it’s where “but does it take glock mags?” meets modern 2011 features.  All the ergonomics, crisp trigger, and other things 1911 and 2011 fans talk about, and then somewhere along the line, this happened.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? The 2011 Unicorn or Brightness Settings Be Warned?
This gun raises more than a few questions, but namely; why? I’ve heard of BBQ guns, and golden guns, but I was unaware of easter and/or gender-reveal guns.  While functionally this checks out, and yes, it does take Glock mags, I’m going to have to pass on this one.
What do you think? Is this pink and blue Platipus worth it for the $3,499 Buy It Now or would you rather this madness just stop now?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Green Machine or Hopelessly Obscene?
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a fan of the Springfield XD series of pistols.  It’s all the features I hate about a 1911 (namely the grip safety) rolled into a polymer frame. So when I see something like this, it’s hard to know where to start. Yeah, I don’t like the XD, but seriously, why put even more money into a gun that wasn’t worth much to begin with?
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Green Machine or Hopelessly Obscene?
I seriously doubt it was worth it to put a titanium barrel in this. I’ve never liked the XD trigger, and I doubt the groups got better after that was installed.  But hey if you like having a gun chambered in a caliber where the loaded mag is 1/3 the total weight, I guess this is the gun for you.  For me, yeah I think I’ll pass.
What do you think? Is this subcompact Springfield worth it for $375 or would you rather save those funds for a rainy day? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
