The Browns’ reaction to the Shedeur Sanders pick was … subdued

The Cleveland Browns made a big draft move on Saturday, selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The move came after the team spent a late third round pick on Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
It was a curious move to add a second rookie to the quarterback room, but not entirely shocking. And the chance to land Sanders in the fifth round offers some value for a guy many thought would go on day one, if not day two.
The reactions in the Browns war room suggests a top-down approach to this pick. General manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski were seen offering polite clapping but not much in the way of excitement about landing Sanders this late.

As Ollie noted, this suggests maybe Browns owner Jimmy Haslam had some say in this pick. And Adam Schefter offered some details that might back that up. He indicated Deion and Shedeur had “developed a relationship with Jimmy Haslam during the pre-draft process.”
There are a host of reasons Haslam might have pushed for the team to pick Sanders. At the end of the day, NFL owners are the ones who are paying the bills and get to have final say if they so choose. It’s generally not ideal for an owner to be making football decisions, but the richest person in the room usually has the most power when it comes to final decision-making.
Whatever the reasoning for drafting Sanders, as Terrell Owens once told us, “Get your popcorn ready!” […]

How much money do first round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft make?

The 2025 NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday, April 24, with the Tennessee Titans going on the clock shortly after 8 p.m. ET. They clinched the No. 1 pick and are expected to select Cam Ward to open the draft. From there we’ll be off and running for a little over three hours on Thursday evening.
While we’ll see plenty of trades as teams move around the draft board, we already know roughly what the contracts will look like for the 32 rookies selected in the first round. The NFL and NFL Players Association have negotiated a collective bargaining agreement that spells out how rookie contracts work. That coupled with the annual increased based on television revenue increasing allow experts to come up with rough estimates of the deals.
How much will money will first-round rookies in the 2025 NFL Draft earn in their first contract?
Spotrac and Over The Cap track contracts across the NFL and provide estimates on rookie deals. Spotrac appears to be closer to what we can expect based on previous deals, and it gives us a general ballpark. We know that Cam Ward will sign a deal worth more than $40 million as the No. 1 pick. The Philadelphia Eagles currently hold the No. 32 pick and that slot will sign a deal worth just north of $13 million. The rest of the 30 picks of the first round will have salary slots in descending order. Even if a pick is traded, the contract value is assigned to the slot and not the specific team picking in that slot.
The largest chunk of payment for the rookies will be in the form of a signing bonus. They’ll receive base salaries each of the four year, and any remaining money would come in the form of workout or roster bonuses.
How and when can teams extend a rookie’s contract?
All first-round picks receive a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth year. The team has to decide by May following the player’s third year whether or not to exercise the fifth-year option. That means the fifth-year option decisions for this year’s class will come following the 2027 season. Teams can also first start negotiating a contract extension with these rookies after the 2027 season.
Why did the NFL and NFLPA agree to a rookie wage scale?
The slotting of contract values has mostly removed the issue of training camp holdouts. Prior to the 2011 CBA, rookies might hold out trying to get a higher value. The owners wanted a rookie wage scale in order to bring down the total value of contracts that were going to first-year players. The players were willing to give up the leverage for rookies in hopes of getting more for their veteran players. Opinions vary on if they got enough for what they gave up.
Now, the primary issues for delay in contracts are around offset language and guaranteed money.
What is offset language in NFL contracts?
Offset language covers when a player is released before the end of his contract and signs with another team. If there is offset language, the player’s future team contract will offset whatever guaranteed money the first team still owed the player. If there is no offset language, the player can effectively “double dip” by receiving money owed from his previous team and also receiving new money from his next team. Offset language is something teams always want in deals and players never want. […]

When will each team pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday?

The 2025 NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday, April 24 when the Tennessee Titans go on the clock. They have held the No. 1 pick since the season ended, but the ten-minute clock will officially begin just after 8 p.m. ET on Thursday evening.
Once the draft starts, each team has a maximum of ten minutes to make their pick in the first round. The time drops to seven minutes in the second round, five minutes in the third through sixth rounds, and four minutes in the seventh and final round. If a team does not pick in its allotted time, it can still make a selection, but the next time will be able to make their pick at any point.
The Titans are expected to select Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward, but that doesn’t mean we’ll get a quick first pick. They could make the pick quickly or they could sit on it to wait for any last minute Godfather offers. There are still NFL Draft odds for who they’ll take first that are not Ward, but expect it to be Ward.
Roger Goodell will open the draft shortly after 8 p.m. ET when he welcomes fans to Green Bay. That suggests the Titans pick will probably come in sometime between 8:02 and 8:12 p.m. ET. From there, we’ll be off to the races. Virtually no team makes their first round pick as soon as they’re on the clock. Trade talks will keep everybody busy, and most will take at least five minutes if not closer to the full ten minutes.
With all that in mind, we’ve decided to try and estimate when we can expect each pick to happen on Thursday at the 2025 NFL Draft. We’ve listed the given teams, but some of these will change as trades happen throughout Thursday evening. We’ll update this article as official pick times come in and we have a better handle on when things might happen later in the evening. It is highly unlikely the first round runs past midnight. All times listed are ET.

Tennessee Titans – 8:04 p.m.
Cleveland Browns – 8:13
New York Giants – 8:21
New England Patriots – 8:29
Jacksonville Jaguars – 8:36
Las Vegas Raiders – 8:42

Carolina Panthers – 8:57
New Orleans Saints – 9:05

San Francisco 49ers – 9:22

How much will Cam Ward earn in his first NFL contract as the No. 1 overall pick?

The 2025 NFL Draft gets underway at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 24, but we already know the first player that will come off the board. Unexpected things do happen, but the Tennessee Titans are expected to pick Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick.
Thanks to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, we can figure out the general structure of Ward’s rookie contract. He won’t sign it immediately, but given that rookie contracts are effectively negotiated through the CBA, we should expect him to sign before training camp. Non-quarterbacks might sign earlier, but quarterbacks will often take a little longer into July ahead of training camp.
When Ward does sign his contract, it will likely be worth north of $40 million. Spotrac is projecting the contract to have a total value of $43,010,000. They project cap numbers of $7,820,000, $9,775,000, $11,730,000, and $13,685,000. On the other hand, Over The Cap is projecting a total value of $48,839,586. They project a signing bonus portion of $32,159,700, with annual salaries of $840,000, $3,059,981, $5,279,962, and $7,499,943.
Spotrac’s total number seems more in line with what Ward will end up getting. Last year’s No. 1 pick, Caleb Williams, signed a deal worth $39,486,058. He received a signing bonus worth $25,537,132 for the first year, and $9,929,106 in roster bonus money across the second, third, and fourth seasons. This is similar to what Bryce Young signed on his rookie deal the year prior, albeit slightly higher due to annual inflation.
The biggest negotiating point is usually around offset language. This language covers when a player is released before the end of his contract and signs with another team. If there is offset language, the future team’s contract will offset whatever guaranteed money the first team still owed the player. Offset language is something teams always want in deals and players never want. If Ward is delayed signing his rookie contract, it will likely be due to offset language. […]

Breaking down all the 2025 Boston Marathon winners

The 2025 Boston Marathon got underway at 9:06 a.m. ET and the first winner has crossed the finish line on Boylston Street near Copley Square. Swiss wheelchair racer Marcel Hug was the first person to finish as he claimed his eighth Boston Marathon title. He finished the race with a time of 1:21:34.
This victory marked his third straight win and moved him a little closer to Ernst van Dyk’s record ten titles. He finished a couple minutes after wave 2 of the runners got started. Waves 3 and 4 had not even started their races when Hug crossed the finish line.
The first American was also the second athlete of the day to cross the finish line. Daniel Romanchuk finished second with a time of 1:25:58. This marked his third straight runner-up finish behind Hug. Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair division in 2022 and 2019.
