A 77-year-old woman was stabbed to death when she interrupted an armed car thief at her home in an Atlanta suburb over the weekend, according to reports.
The horrifying incident unfolded at around noon on Saturday in Paces West, a gated community in the upscale enclave of Buckhead.
A male suspect was in the process of stealing a Lexus SUV from the home of Eleanor J. Bowles when she encountered him in her garage, authorities say.
Bowles was stabbed multiple times and left for dead as the suspect drove off in her vehicle, 11 Alive reports.
Her body was found later that day by her son who had come to celebrate the holidays.
The Lexus was recovered in Dekalb County after being driven extensively throughout Atlanta, authorities say.
On Monday, police arrested 23-year-old Antonio Brown and booked him at Dekalb County jail on charges including murder, aggravated battery, possession of a knife, elder abuse, and hijacking a motor vehicle.
Authorities say they are still unclear how the suspect managed to enter the guarded community, which is located just over a mile from the Georgia Governor’s Mansion.
An explosion of violent crime in Atlanta has spilled into Buckhead, one of the city’s most exclusive districts, prompting residents to seek secession and their own police force, as Infowars reported last year.
Crime in the chic enclave has gotten so bad, residents have said they are “genuinely concerned for their safety” and officials have been examining their options for breaking away from Atlanta.
